On October 23, 2o08, after spending more than 3 weeks in the hospital for treatment for a severe case of pneumonia, I was diagnosed with AIDS. I was floored, to say the least. Thankfully, I have the most supportive family and friends in the world. From the beginning, everyone just asked, “What do we need to do to help.” Amazing. I am blessed every day to be surrounded by such selfless and caring people. I cannot imagine being alive today without the help of my loved ones. There are so many others who do not have the support of a family or friends, babies, young children, adults, and seniors, who I know personally who struggle with the smallest details of living every day with AIDS. For them, I will ride on October 9th. Training rides, lead by Team OC, have begun. Join us!

Workout: Hill Repeats x 5

On Thursday, I return to Lake San Antonio, California, with LA Tri Club and 6,500 other triathletes to race the Avia Wildflower Triathlon. I am doing the sprint/mountain race. This will be a fun course. I love mountain biking and was riding more dirt and single track before ever mounting a triathlon bike. The mountain bike triathlon is on Saturday, May 1, 2010, and is: Swim .25 miles + Bike 9.7 miles + Run 2 miles. I already know I’m going to receive a DNF (Did Not Finish), because I will not be competing the swim portion of the race. With recent rains in California, my doctor is worried about bacteria levels in the lake and their affect on my already compromised immune system. In the past, my ego would have been hurt, and I would have been very angry and frustrated with a DNF on my record. At this point in my life, I am thankful and blessed to have the ability. I’ll take the DNF.

I have so many things and people to be thankful for, and one of the people I want shout out is my one month old running coach, Craig Moss, who just ROCKED the Boston Marathon in 03:22:25. He is  a magnet middle school science and health teach and a Students Run LA coach. From his blog, “Thank God I Was Fat“, he used to be seriously overweight until he found running at the age of 18. To see some great photos of Coach Moss with his students taken by professional sports photographer Rich Cruse click here.

The Evolution of Fitness

April 22, 2010

Workout Run 40 minutes + Bike 16 Miles

The concept of fitness has very much evolved over the years from being very much a non-industry or a lifestyle choice. Instead, it began very organically in the 1950’s out of the necessity for power and Olympic lifters, bodybuilders, and athletes to achieve optimal strength, size, speed and agility. It was hardly mainstream and consisted then of mostly men. There is no real archival history to site except to look at what was happening in sports at that time.

1959 – We saw the first ever running of the Daytona 500.
1958 – The Brooklyn Dodgers leave New York and move west to California and become my beloved Los Angeles Dodgers.
1956 – Real Madrid wins the first European Cup in football. (Soccer for us American’s.)
1956 – Don Larsen pitched a perfect game as a New York Yankee in the Major League Baseball World Series
1954 – Roger Bannister runs the first ever sub-4:00 mile.
1953 – Maureen Connolly was the first woman ever to win tennis’ Grand Slam.
1952 – Dick Button performs the first triple jump in figure skating in the Winter Olympic Games.
1951 – The National Football League has its first Pro Bowl game in Los Angeles, California.*
